2024 50th Paul Short Run Preview

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The annual Paul Short Run presented by ASICS is upon us again, taking place next weekend at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus. After the first Paul Short Run took place five decades ago, the 50th run is set to be the biggest to date.

For the first time in the race's 50-year history, the Paul Short Run will be split over two days, with the high school races taking place on Friday, October 4th and the college races on Saturday, October 5th Each year, a total of over 7,000 athletes will compete, representing over 600 different high schools and colleges. There will be six high school races on Friday, while there will be eight college races on Saturday.

The Paul Short Run is in honor of the late Paul Short, who served as Lehigh's executive director and associate athletics director for 29 years. During his tenure at Lehigh, Short became an avid fan of Lehigh cross country and track and field. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1934 and was inducted into the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. He excelled as a student-athlete in football, wrestling, baseball and lacrosse.

In 1969, former Lehigh cross country and track and field head coach John Covert organized the meet with only seven teams participating. In 1981, the women joined the Paul Short Run and ran a 5K, which was eventually converted to a 6K in 2000.

The Yale Bulldogs earned their second-ever first-place finish in the men's 8K Gold Run last year with 101 points, having won first place in 1989. Wingate took second place with 123 points, while Stony Brook rounded out the top three with 159 points. Evan Dorenkamp of Penn State University topped the others with a time of 23:53.7. Murphy Smith of Navy took second place with a time of 23:59.3, while Ethan Gregg of Wisconsin-La Crosse took third place with a time of 24:00.2.

Last year, Utah Valley won the women's gold 6K, scoring an impressive 77 points to take the top prize. Wake Forest placed second with 129 points, while Boston University placed third with 176 points. The race's top runner was Judy Kosgei of South Carolina, who crossed the finish line in 19:54.9. Hannah Prosser of Boston University took second place (19:59.1), while Emily Boutin of Navy took third place (20:15.8).

Manheim Township High School won first place as a team at the 2023 Boys High School Brown 5K, scoring 148 points, narrowly edging out Hershey's 149. Calvert Hall College took third place with 181 points, while the race was won individually by Ringgold's Ryan Pajak. For the girls, Morgantown High School won first place as a team with a score of 131, followed by Owen J. Roberts (178) and Mount Saint Joseph Academy (192). The overall individual winner in the Brown Girls High School 5K was Virginia Kraus of nearby Moravian Academy.

Admission: Free
Parking: Parking attendants will allow team vehicles to park in designated Stabler parking spaces. All spectator parking is also available in the Stabler parking lots for $10.00 per vehicle. Cash is preferred and is the fastest method, but credit cards are also accepted. Spectators are advised to arrive early to ensure they can see the entire race.
