Ilia Malinin is aiming for back-to-back Grand Prix victories as the figure skating season continues live with Skate Canada peacock from Friday to Sunday.

Malinin, the 19-year-old world champion from Virginia, claims her third straight title at Skate America, which opened the six-event Grand Prix series leading to the Grand Prix Final in December.

Malinin can qualify for the Grand Prix Finals, where the top six per discipline in the series are selected, with a podium finish at Skate Canada in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Grand Prix Final is often a preview of the World Championships in March.

Malinin's competitors at Skate Canada include compatriot Jason Brown, who finished fifth at the last two world championships, and South Korea's Cha Jun-Hwan, the silver medalist at the 2023 world championships.

Skate Canada also features the reigning world champions in women's singles (Kaori Sakamoto of Japan) and pairs (Canadians Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps).

Two-time US champion Alysa Liu is taking part in the Grand Prix for the first time since retiring after the 2021/22 season. Liu, 19, returned to full competition two weeks ago and won a lower-level event with a total score that would have placed fifth at Skate America.
