4 takeaways as the Bruins beat the Kings in overtime

BOSTON – After attempting just one shot in regulation, David Pastrnak provided a loud end to a quiet afternoon at TD Garden on Saturday, giving the Bruins a 2-1 overtime victory over the Kings.

In three-on-three overtime, Mason Lohrei hit it into the net with 1:53 left, and Pastrnak fired the ball past Darcy Kuemper.

Like Pastrnak, the Bruins started slowly, leading 33-26 in front of a TD Garden crowd that was full of afternoon energy, but they did enough to escape with a win.

After a scoreless first half, the Kings pulled ahead 5:22 into the second half when Trevor Moore grabbed a rebound under a sweeping Jeremy Swayman.

The Bruins had a power play late in the second period that was quickly wiped out by a Pavel Zacha penalty, but that turned into a blessing. With the additional space created by a four-on-four system, Brad Marchand carried the puck into the zone and fired a long shot to Darcy Kuemper from above the left circle. The long rebound raced through the other circle to Elias Lindholm, who still had time for a one-timer. He shot a shot into the open goal to make it 1-1.

Swayman performed exceptionally well throughout and finished the game with 32 saves.

The Bruins host the Panthers in a rematch of their season opener on Monday at 1 p.m.

Jeremy Swayman no longer looks rusty – Any concerns that arose from Swayman being late due to his contract dispute were allayed on Saturday. The newly enriched goaltender made 29 saves in regulation and three more in overtime to keep the Bruins afloat. He has now won both starts.

Matt Poitras looked good – The Bruins' 20-year-old forward reminded viewers why people were so excited about him last year. Poitras was smart and creative with the puck and seemed to have a good feel for playing with Justin Brazeau and Trent Frederic. At the end of the game, he joined the second power play and played with Pastrnak and Lohrei as a trio in overtime.

After struggling in faceoffs last year, he won all three draws he took.

The Bruins haven't fixed their slow starts – Boston fell 1-0 for the third straight game. The Bruins were 2-0 against Florida on Tuesday. They fell behind Montreal 1-0 and 2-1. They only took the lead on Saturday thanks to Pastrnak's game-winner.

As expected, Ian Mitchell clarifies waivers – Ian Mitchell heads to Providence after being approved for waivers on Saturday. He will be the Bruins' top defenseman.
