5 things you may have missed in UND's 35-31 loss at Indiana State – Grand Forks Herald

5 things you may have missed in UND's 35-31 loss at Indiana State – Grand Forks Herald

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – UND fell to 0-4 on the road this season with a 35-31 loss at Memorial Stadium to Indiana State.

Here are five things you may have missed during the game.

There was a big momentum late in the first half when UND All-American wide receiver Bo Belquist dropped a punt.

A 9-yard Belquist touchdown on a slant gave UND a 21-13 lead with 1:59 left in the second quarter, then the Fighting Hawks defense forced a three-and-out.

With 1:18 left in the first half, the punt hit Belquist high and Indiana State recovered at UND's 34.

“I’m not even going to talk about it,” UND coach Bubba Schweigert said. “The guy is trying hard. He was great for us. This is what happens.”

Three plays later, Indiana State scored. Rashad Rochelle caught a 16-yard touchdown 44 seconds before halftime.

2. Wide receiver depth is increased

UND's wide receiver depth was a positive against the Sycamores.

Caden Dennis finished the game with five catches for 54 yards, with 43 of those yards coming after the catch.

Nate DeMontagnac had five grabs for 38 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass from Simon Romfo – DeMontagnac's first career touchdown.

Nick Kupfer had three grabs for 56 yards, including a long catch for 22 yards.

Fumbles were a problem for UND.

The Fighting Hawks only lost one fumble, but still had three more to recover.

On UND's third drive of the game, quarterback Simon Romfo took a deep drop and dropped back to throw copper deep.

However, he was deprived of the ball and the tackle that Seth Anderson needed to recover.

The fumble came on 2nd-and-10 and the drive ended at midfield. The Sycamores countered with an 87-yard scoring drive.

Another troubling fumble came with 38 seconds left before halftime when UND started a drive at the end of the second quarter.

Romfo fell on the fumble and UND decided to just let the remaining time expire, despite starting the drive with good field position after a kick from Sawyer Seidl that was returned to the 38.

UND's hopes of a good start were quickly dashed.
After losing the coin toss and starting with the ball, the Hawks' first play was a handoff to Gaven Ziebarth for no gain.

On the next play, Romfo, who hadn't thrown an interception in the last four games, came out of the game with his booted legs and found a defender in the face.

Romfo quickly unloaded a pass, but the only player in the box was Indiana State's Joey Shew, who returned the interception 20 yards for a touchdown.

5. Sycamores overcome XP problems

Indiana State overcame some strange extra point mishaps with strange 2-point conversions.

The Sycamores had an extra point blocked by Kaden Vig and failed on a 2-point conversion from the swinging gate kicking formation.

However, Indiana State was able to get right back on track thanks to a 2-point conversion reverse pass from Rashad Rochelle to Ethan Chambers and a tackle-able pass.

On the return pass, Rochelle ran backwards, was hemmed in by UND defenders and threw an awkward pass to Chambers in the end zone.

On the legal tackle, Elijah Owens sprinted to the right and threw back to the left to 6-foot-2 Jude McCoskey, who rolled in without making any contact.
