Newcastle United vs Arsenal: Premier League – live | Premier League

Important events

Both sides could really use the three points this afternoon to get back into shape. Newcastle were boosted by their League Cup victory over Chelsea during the week, but they are without a win in the Premier League for five years. Arsenal also had some Carabou-inspired fun during the week, overtaking Preston, but otherwise haven't been their usual self-assured side of late: they're winless on two occasions in the Premier League, with recent victories over Leicester, Southampton and Shakhtar Donetsk ensuring that More stress along the way than perhaps was necessary. Here everyone is part of the bigger picture.

Newcastle make three changes from the team that started last weekend's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea. Anthony Gordon, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff replace Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almirón, all of whom drop to the bench. Injury worries: Alexander Isak makes it.

Arsenal make a change to their eleven after their 2-2 draw with Liverpool. William Saliba is back from the suspension he picked up at Bournemouth, so Ben White makes way and drops to the bench. Gabriel and Jurriën Timber, both in the starting lineup, have overcome their injury problems well.

preamble

It's the Walls and Bridges derby! Whatever gets you through lunchtime is fine.

A lot has happened between Newcastle and Arsenal since young Winston O'Boogie shaped the FA Cup final. George Eastham, Marc Overmars and Nicolas Anelka, Cheik Tioté, all of it. So let's take a quick look at last November when this exploded in everyone's astonished coupon…

…and we never heard the end of it eons. It was a rare win for Toon against the Gunners, who avenged their defeat with a 4-1 win at the Emirates three months later; Arsenal have won nine of their last twelve Premier League games against Newcastle. Depending on how you slice it, recent history favors either the hosts or the visitors. No need to thank us, we're here to help, but suffice it to say that everything is well prepared: Newcastle needs to get back into the race for Europe, while Arsenal are desperate to stay on the heels of Manchester City and Liverpool wants. Kick-off is at 12:30 GMT. It's on!
