West Indies vs England: Hosts race for victory in first ODI

With England's Test tour of Pakistan only ending on Saturday, it meant a number of key players, including three ODIs and five T20s, were left out for this Caribbean tour.

Harry Brook, Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson are among the players skipping this series ahead of the pre-Christmas Test tour of New Zealand.

Meanwhile, regular captain Jos Buttler was ruled out with a calf injury, while veterans such as Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood have not featured since last autumn's World Cup.

This meant England fielded an inexperienced side in Antigua, including four debutants in Turner, Cox and all-rounders Dan Mousley and Jamie Overton.

In fact, spinner Adil Rashid outscored all other players' internationals combined with 140 to 127.

Additionally, some English debutants lacked experience in 50-over cricket, with Cox and Mousley playing their first List A games in 20 months and three years respectively.

This arguably left them unprepared for the challenges of the longer white-ball format, as former England captain Sir Alastair Cook noted on TNT Sports: “There is a lack of experience in working out different situations when you are under increased scrutiny in international cricket. “ “.

Even those with more experience, like 30-year-old Overton, looked rusty as the Surrey player was sent off for a first-ball duck from Motie.

With so many absentees and numerous debutants sandwiched between test tours, the series feels like an afterthought.

But this is the ninth of just 14 ODIs scheduled between the World Cup and the Champions Trophy in February – England must emerge from the series with valuable experience or they could face another embarrassing exit from the international tournament.
