The ASU Football vs. Oklahoma State game will continue after a weather delay

The ASU Football vs. Oklahoma State game will resume at approximately 5:00 p.m. MST following a weather delay due to lightning in the area.

It was announced that players will return to the field at 4:30 p.m. MST for a new warm-up session.

The game is scheduled to continue on FOX in Oklahoma and Arizona (FOX 10 in Phoenix), as well as on FS1 and FS2 outside of the game's local markets.

The game was moved from a 4:00 p.m. MST kickoff to a 12:30 p.m. kickoff to avoid the lightning and thunderstorms, but the game in Stillwater, Oklahoma was suspended at halftime as ASU trailed 21-14 leadership lay.

Boone Pickens Stadium was evacuated as a precaution. The scoreboard read: “Thunderstorms and lightning are in the area and we are suspending play until further notice. If you are in outdoor seating, feel free to move to the area beneath the stadium seating at this time.”

What the NCAA says about weather delays

The NCAA's lightning safety rules state: “To resume athletics activities, lightning safety experts recommend waiting 30 minutes after both the last sound of thunder and the last flash of lightning are at least six miles away and moving away from the venue. If there is lightning.” If lightning is seen without thunder being heard, it may be out of range and therefore less likely to pose a significant threat.

“Note that lightning can be visible from a much greater distance at night than during the day because clouds are illuminated from within by lightning. This greater distance may mean that lightning no longer poses a significant threat. At night, use both the sound of thunder and the sight of the lightning channel itself to decide when to reset the 30-minute return-to-play clock before outdoor athletics activities resume.”

The early debate about the ASU-Oklahoma State game is now moot

There was some debate on social media about how the ASU-Oklahoma State game might be scheduled due to the inclement weather for ASU. One interpretation of Big 12 rules said ASU would win because two quarters had been played and the Sun Devils were up 21-14.

But not everyone agreed. The wording states that “when more than half” of the game is completed. ASU and Oklahoma State had played a half, not more than half of their game.

However, the debate is now a moot point as the two teams are expected to resume play.
