The mystique surrounding Dolly Parton's relationship with her husband Carl Thomas Dean lives on, as her good friend Reba McEntire just admitted that she has never met the man.

The women are two of country music's powerhouses and have been friends for decades. However, during a recent radio show, McEntire revealed some quirks in their friendship, things you might not expect considering how long they've known each other.

“Is Dolly as good a cook as Dolly says?” Radio host Andy Cohen asked guest McEntire on his Sirius XM show.

“I don’t know, I’ve never eaten from her,” McEntire shared. “She never invited me,” adding that she had never been to Parton’s house.

“Have you met Carl?” Cohen examined.

“No, have you?” McEntire replied.

Cohen admitted that this was not the case. “But people really swear he exists,” he said.

McEntire completely agreed. “Yeah, I saw something the other day – they were camping and she and Carl went back to where they got married.”

Parton and her ever-elusive husband have been married for 57 years. They met in a laundromat when she was 18 and he was 22.

Parton told People magazine in 2022 that her record label at the time stopped her from getting married because they had invested so much money in her as an artist. Parton and Dean didn't wait and married in a small chapel in 1966 after two years of dating.

“I always joke and laugh when people ask me, 'What's the key to my long marriage and lasting love?' I always say, “Stay away.” And there’s a lot of truth to that because I travel a lot and my husband is a bit of a loner. So we really enjoy it when we’re together,” she told the outlet.

Although she has won dozens of awards and is revered as a country music icon, Dean has kept her distance and hasn't shown up to Parton's big events since attending a disastrous dinner early in her career.

“My husband just doesn’t want to be in the spotlight,” she told Dan Rather on his show “The Big Interview” in 2013.

“Years ago when I came to Nashville, I took him to my first awards dinner,” she said. “And my husband went with me, rented a tuxedo that I had him make. He was absolutely miserable. And on the way from dinner to the car he was taking things off,” she said with a laugh.

“We got in the car and he said, 'You know what, I want you to do really well. … I don't mind what you do, but I'm never going to do any of these damn things again, so don't do it.” “I don't even wonder.” And I never did. And he never did.

“He's a good guy and we get along great. We are good friends. Now he is a very complex, committed person. I never get tired of him. He has his own sense of humor. He has his own mindset.”

But people remain interested in how Parton, 79 in January, and her husband make their untraditional marriage work.

“I think Carl and I have talked about pretty much everything over the years; we are different people. But we just work so well together. He's a homebody and I love traveling,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2023. He adds that Dean isn't looking to get out and socialize. “He loves living on the farm and taking care of our property, as he has for many years.”

“He loves music, but he’s not in the music business at all. So we have different things to talk about – his world and my world – and they fit together really well. We have a lot of love and respect for each other and I think the key to it all is that we both have (a) crazy, twisted sense of humor.”
