New York City Marathon results: Sheila Chepkirui stuns Hellen Obiri with a last-mile kick

Sheila Chepkirui captured the tape Sunday morning at the women's New York City Marathon, and she did it in the most impressive way: She beat out Hellen Obiri and slammed the door on Obiri's legendary final two years.

Chepkirui finished with a time of 2:24:35, a fulfillment of the promise she had made for years.

“It was really hard, I pushed myself to my limits and I’m so happy,” she said after the race.

Chepkirui started Sunday with an impressive personal best of 2:17:29, but was an underdog on the famous course with back-to-back Boston Marathon winners Obiri, Sharon Lokedi and Vivian Cheruiyot.

But Chepkirui proved to be an indestructible pest in Obiri's back-to-back mission.

After winning the 2022 and 2023 New York City Marathons with thrilling last-minute sprints, Sunday's race appeared to be a show of dominance for Obiri in the final five miles to four to three to two.

But in the last mile, 33-year-old Chepkirui was not only at her side, but also took control. Although it seemed as if Obiri would let her fellow Kenyan set the pace, Chepkirui took that pace, put the pedal to the metal and sprinted away from Obiri to win her first major marathon and announce to the world her arrival in the elite -Scene is staying.
