14-year NBA veteran and former Bulls player announces his retirement

DJ Augustin was selected ninth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. The 5-foot-10 point guard spent four seasons in Charlotte and then spent time with ten different teams.

Augustin played 291 games in four seasons for the Orlando Magic and had brief stints everywhere except Orlando and Charlotte in his NBA career. With 573 of his 976 career games coming between Orlando and Charlotte, Augustin also spent time with the OKC Thunder, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers and the Toronto Raptors.

Augustin averaged 9.5 points, 3.9 assists and 1.8 rebounds for his career. He also appeared in 38 career NBA playoff games.

Augustin announced his NBA retirement in a heartfelt Instagram post on Sunday.

“Today I officially announce my retirement from the game I have loved for so long,” Augustin began his message. “Basketball was more than a sport, it was a journey filled with unforgettable memories, friendships, lessons and experiences off the court.”

With his 37th birthday just a week away, Augustin decided it was time to pursue a career.

“From growing up in New Orleans with the dream of making it to the NBA to having a 15-season career and making that dream come true. I am grateful for every high and every low, every team, every city and every fan who has supported me and my family along this journey,” Augustin added.

Augustin added more heartfelt words about his NBA career, ending his message by saying, “I may retire as a player, but I will always be connected to this game we all love.” Thank you for being a part of my story.”
