Lions vs. Packers: Live score updates, highlights, injury news

The Detroit Lions are looking for their first 7-1 start since the 1956 season. Getting there won't be easy, however, as the Lions face a 6-2 Green Bay Packers team this week. The Packers have won four straight games, although three of those games were close and won by just one score.

Detroit has had the advantage in this matchup lately. The Lions have won four of the last five games against the Packers, but Green Bay handily won the last game between the two teams – a 37-30 victory on Thanksgiving.

Since that Thanksgiving game, both teams have experienced an upswing. The Packers had a huge run at the end of the 2023 season, not only making the playoffs but also almost making it to the NFC Championship game. The lions did reach the conference championship game and have lost just one contest since that fateful day in San Francisco.

This year the Packers have a much improved defense and their typically efficient offense. The Lions are in a very similar boat. Their offense is currently making incredible progress, averaging 43.0 points over the last four games. Their defense has been battered by injuries, but they are holding on thanks to an opportunistic defense that constantly forces turnovers.

First quarter

The Packers won the throw and elected to receive. Green Bay attacked Detroit's defense on the ground, with Josh Jacobs rushing for 22 yards on his first two carries. They got into a quarter-and-inch situation on the Lions' side and then easily converted it with a direct snap to Tucker Kraft to keep the drive alive. A 19-yard pass to Christian Watson put Green Bay within field goal range. The drive ended with Jordan Love unable to reach Jacobs due to pressure in the face, forcing Green Bay to settle for a field goal. 3-0 Packers.

Detroit responded with a very similar strategy. David Montgomery took his first three carries into Packers territory for 23 yards. Then Jared Goff hit Sam LaPorta for 19 yards into field goal range. A draw against Montgomery on third-and-4 gave Detroit a first-and-goal lead at the 8-yard line. However, Detroit chose to run three times in a row and only managed to reach the 5-yard line.

Second quarter

Facing a four-and-goal from the 5-yard line, the Lions went for it. An encroachment penalty cut the yardage in half and Goff connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for the 3-yard touchdown catch and an early one 7-3 Lions lead.

The Packers continued to have success on the ground with a 37-yard run by Jacobs to start the drive.

However, a false start turned a third-and-three into a third-and-8, and Love's deep shot into double coverage fell incomplete. A failed attempt to get the Lions offside on fourth down resulted in a delay of the game and the punt.

Detroit would start the following drive at its own 9-yard line. They would quickly score 12 points with a pass to Jahmyr Gibbs. On the next downs, the Lions faced a third-and-4 and Goff was sacked, leading to their first punt of the day.

A good punt and a holding penalty pushed the Packers back to their own 20-yard line to start the next drive.
