Live Updates: Donald Trump, Kamala Harris Election News

Vice President Kamala Harris' cameo on NBC's “Saturday Night Live” triggered the administration's “concurrent” provision, a longstanding broadcast rule that former President Donald Trump exploited on Sunday.

“Hello to our great sports fans,” Trump said at the start of an unusual 60-second video that played on many NBC networks during coverage of the NASCAR post-race. Trump, wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat, urged viewers to vote.

Almost as soon as Harris was confirmed to appear on “SNL” on Saturday, Trump allies raised questions about the Federal Communications Commission’s “concurrent” rule. Brendan Carr, a Republican who was appointed to the commission by Trump in 2017, wrote on X: “This is a clear and obvious attempt to circumvent the FCC’s equal time rule.”

The government policy seeks to ensure that when a political candidate receives airtime on a broadcaster, the candidate's opponents can demand equal opportunities. News shows are exempt, but entertainment shows like “SNL” are not.

On “SNL,” Harris received about one minute and 30 seconds of “free” airtime, according to a report the network filed with the FCC.

“We are just two days away from the most important election in our country’s history,” Trump said. “We need to save our country and it needs to be saved, it is in a very bad state.”

Some of Trump's comments were highly questionable, including his claim, “We're going to end up in a depression because of what's happening,” but the video was not fact-checked.
