Jerry Jones' dark comment on Dak Prescott's injury is a terrible sign for the Cowboys

Jerry Jones' dark comment on Dak Prescott's injury is a terrible sign for the Cowboys

Just when you thought the Dallas Cowboys' season couldn't get any worse, Dak Prescott was sidelined early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons after suffering a hamstring injury.

Prescott was injured throwing a pass into an empty pocket. He had enjoyed his most effective rushing performance of the season, collecting 30 yards in three scrambles. Maybe that played a role in the injury.

With Dallas' season on the verge of collapse, the severity of Prescott's injury could determine whether they buy or sell at the deadline. Of course, Jerry Jones was the first to comment on the injury, and his assessment doesn't bode well for the Cowboys' quarterback.

That sums up the feeling of Cowboys Nation.

While the severity of the injury is unknown, Prescott was seen clearly limping as he left the field following the loss. It's encouraging that Dak was able to escape on his own, but Jones' comments suggest further testing could confirm a potentially serious injury.

At first, Prescott's hand appeared to be the problem. The FOX broadcast showed Prescott being treated on the sidelines. That could be a different problem for the Cowboys quarterback. The Achilles tendon forced him to give up the game.

If Prescott is forced to miss time, Cooper Rush will take the reins of the offense. We got a relatively large sample of Rush on Sunday after Prescott was ruled out, and it wasn't encouraging. He attempted 25 passes in one quarter of the game, totaling 115 yards and a touchdown in garbage time. He managed just 4.3 yards per attempt and completed 52% of his passes.

The timing of Prescott's injury puts the front office in a difficult position with the NFL trade deadline just two days away. The offense had a limited ceiling with No. 4 under center. This obviously doesn't apply to Rush.

Assuming Prescott is considered week-to-week. Should Jerry Jones be aggressive in purchasing talent? While it's difficult to get out of the 3-5 gap, Micah Parsons and DaRon Bland – and possibly DeMarcus Lawrence – are close to returning. Is the push worth it, or should Dallas trade away some veterans who could receive promising draft capital in 2025?

It's impossible to come to terms with this situation, but we can only speculate before Prescott undergoes further testing as to what will likely happen when the team arrives back in Dallas. However, if Jones' comment is any indication, Prescott's injury could be worse than it looked in real time.
