Pike Road is home to the 13th Annual Veterans Honors Ceremony

PIKE ROAD, Ala. (WSFA) – The City of Pike Road wants veterans to know their sacrifice is important and recognized. That's why city officials have held a veterans recognition ceremony for 13 years.

The ceremony will take place the week before Veterans Day, which Mayor Gordon Stone said is a strategic move.

“We know that there are many very important and meaningful veterans celebrations on Veterans Day itself, and we don’t want to discourage anyone from participating,” he said.

The event included speeches from Stone and Colonel Derrick Iwanenko, who is stationed at nearby Maxwell Air Force Base.

There was also a colors presentation, a wreath laying ceremony and seven veterans whose names were permanently engraved at the site of the Pike Road Veterans Memorial Landmark.

“It just means so much to me,” said Mary Hunter, whose husband engraved his name. “My husband led the way in the service for this brick to be paved here in (Pike Road, Alabama) and I thank God for that.”

Younger generations were also involved. Pike Road Intermediate School students led the Pledge of Allegiance and the high school show choir sang the national anthem.

Veterans Day is Monday, November 11th.
