Tornadoes and damaging winds threaten Texas and Missouri again Monday

A severe storm lasting several days once again put millions of people in the central United States on alert on Monday.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, severe thunderstorms are likely again, particularly in the afternoon into early evening hours from northeast Texas to southwest Missouri. Tornadoes, some of which can be strong, and damaging winds represent the primary danger in the development of severe storms.

As of Monday morning, storms were already moving across an area from the Ark-La-Tex region to the Mid-Mississippi Valley, along with a separate line of storms in western northern Texas and southwestern Oklahoma near a developing low-pressure system. This low will strengthen slightly as it moves northeast.

Some sunshine may occur between these storm areas in parts of Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma, which will help charge the atmosphere. Storm activity is expected to increase in intensity from late morning through the afternoon, primarily from eastern Oklahoma to northeast Texas.

A three-hour radar loop shows where showers and thunderstorms will occur. Severe thunderstorm warnings are displayed in yellow. Tornado warnings are shown in red, while tornado warnings with a confirmed tornado are shown in purple. Flash flood warnings are shown in green, while flash flood emergencies are shown in pink.

Most of these storms will likely form into a line, but conditions may allow supercells to form within the line. According to the FOX Forecast Center, this could result in some strong tornadoes and damaging winds.

The serious threat is expected to diminish by Monday evening as the storm system moves out of the area with daytime warming. Storms over East and Southeast Texas could slow and become less severe as the system weakens.

As the major weather system continues its eastward trek Monday, it is bringing another round of torrential rain to the central United States. This will create a wide moisture corridor stretching from Texas to Michigan.

The Ozarks region in particular could experience even higher amounts of precipitation due to terrain-enhancing effects. As the storm system moves north, it will gradually weaken, but rain is still expected to reach areas as far north as Wisconsin and Michigan.

Given recent heavy rains in parts of western Arkansas and southern Missouri, repeated heavy rains on Monday could increase the risk of flooding in those areas.

Although rainfall totals on Monday are expected to be lower than over the weekend, additional heavy rainfall in the same regions could exacerbate flooding concerns.
