Ashburn 2024 Voter Guide: Key Races, How to Vote

ASHBURN, VA – The 2024 general election will take place on Tuesday, November 5, where voters in Ashburn and Loudoun County will cast their votes for president and Congress, among other important decisions.

All Loudoun County voters will have presidential/vice presidential, 10th Congressional District, U.S. Senate, Loudoun County bond issues and a Virginia constitutional amendment questions on the ballot.

Local elections will also be held in select communities: Hamilton City Council, Hillsboro Mayor and City Council, Leesburg Mayor and City Council, Lovettsville Mayor and City Council, Purcellville Mayor and City Council.

Polls are open Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., but anyone in line by 7 p.m. can vote.

Important races in the November election

In addition to the highly anticipated presidential race between Kamala Harris, Donald Trump and third-party candidates, there are several important races in Loudoun County.

In the 10th Congressional District, Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-Loudoun) did not seek re-election after receiving a diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy. Democrat Suhas Subramanyam and Republican Mike Clancy won their party's primary and ran against each other in the general election.

According to the Virginia Public Access Project, the 10th Congressional District is considered a competitive district. The district includes Loudoun County, part of Prince William County, part of Fairfax County, Fauquier County, Manassas City, Manassas Park City and Rappahannock County.

Subramanyam, a current Virginia state senator who represents part of Loudoun County, has campaign priorities such as protecting abortion rights, gun safety restrictions, health care access and affordability, environmental protection and more.

Clancy, who has worked as a lawyer and business executive, outlined campaign priorities such as inflation and stimulating the economy, border security, fully funding law enforcement, supporting the rights of gun owners and more.

Along with the 10th Congressional District race, voters will decide the U.S. Senate duel between incumbent Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine and Republican Hung Cao.

Kaine was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 after holding elected office since 1994, including as governor of Virginia. According to his campaign website, Kaine's priorities include job creation and the economy, protecting reproductive rights, health care affordability, border security, supporting immigration reform, supporting equal rights, protecting the climate and more.

Cao is a Navy veteran who unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Democrat Jennifer Wexton in the 2022 race for Virginia's 10th Congressional District. His campaign priorities include border security, supporting the economy through energy and manufacturing policies, supporting school choice, supporting a strong national defense, protecting gun rights, opposing abortion and more.

Loudoun County voters will also decide whether the county can obtain bonds to finance school projects, public safety projects, parks and recreation projects and transportation projects. Virginia voters will decide whether to offer a tax break to surviving spouses of soldiers killed in action.

How to vote

The deadline to register to vote or update your address was October 15th. However, same-day registration with a provisional ballot is available from October 16th through Election Day, November 5th.

If you are completing a mail-in ballot, it must be returned to the Loudoun County Elections Office by 7:00 p.m. on November 5th or postmarked by November 5th and received at the office by 12:00 p.m. on November 8th. Voters can return their ballots and submit the completed ballot by mail or drop box. Ballot boxes will be available at polling stations on November 5th from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. A ballot drop box is available in front of the election office at 750 Miller Drive, Suite 150, Leesburg, VA 24 hours a day until 7:00 p.m. 5.

To vote on Election Day, visit your assigned polling place on Tuesday, November 5th between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Acceptable identification is required to vote in person. Voters without acceptable identification may sign a statement confirming their identity to vote.

For people with limited mobility, curbside voting is possible at all polling stations.

Voters can confirm their registration status and voting location through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal. The elections office also offers a Loudoun County polling location search.

After the polls close at 7 p.m. on November 5, provisional election results will be posted on the Virginia Department of Elections website. Election officials expect it will take several days to count all ballots, including mail-in ballots, in-person early voting and Election Day ballots.
