The Nicholls Colonels and New Mexico Lobos meet on Monday in college basketball action from The Pit. We will look at this from a betting perspective and identify the best bets for this game. Here's a prediction between Nicholls and New Mexico.

Nicholls summary

The Nicholls Colonels enter this season with the goal of building on a good 2023-24 season in which the Colonels finished 20-14 overall, 13-5 in Southland Conference play and lost to McNeese in the final of the conference championship tournament. The Colonels did not participate in any postseason tournaments. Tevon Saddler was the youngest head coach in the country and managed to win 20 games in his season debut before turning 30 years old. Jamal West Jr. was a true Swiss Army knife for the Colonels last season, averaging 13.4 PPG and 7.4 RPG, but also averaged 1.6 BPG despite being just 6-foot-2.” Robert Brown III is also back in the Nicholls backcourt after posting 13.8 PPG. The Colonels made some moves in the transfer portal, bringing in double-digit scorers in 2023-24 like Caleb Robinson from Gardner-Webb, Jaylen Searles from Utah Tech, Brian Myles from Prairie View A&M and even Trae English from Southland, who most recently played at McNeese. Nicholls has some parts that need to be replaced. Southland will also have a tough time, but you can expect Nicholls to continue to thrive here with their mix of key returns and solid transfer acquisitions.

Why the Nicholls Colonels will win

  • Nicholls has won each of his last eight Monday games.
  • New Mexico has lost three of its last four games at The Pit against opponents not ranked in the AP rankings.

Summary of New Mexico

The New Mexico Lobos enter the 2024-25 season looking to follow up on a fairly successful 2023-24 season, finishing 26-10 overall, including 10-8 in Mountain West play. The Lobos beat Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State and San Diego State en route to the Mountain West tournament title before being ousted by Clemson in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and quickly eliminated. New Mexico lost much of its starting rotation from last year, but still returns some reliable players like Donovan Dent, who had 14.1 PPG and 5.4 APG last season, and Nelly Junior Joseph, who had 8.9 PPG and 8 .2 RPG recorded. Richard Pitino also entered the transfer portal, picking up graduate transfer CJ Noland from North Texas after he posted 10.9 PPG last season. The Lobos should be able to secure a strong reputation in the Mountain West, but only time will tell if New Mexico can come close to repeating last year's success.

Why the New Mexico Lobos will win

  • New Mexico has won 19 of its last 20 games against non-conference opponents at The Pit.
  • Nicholls State has lost each of its last four road games against non-conference opponents.

Nicholls vs New Mexico Prediction

I'm here in New Mexico. I think the Nicholls will be fine as they figure out what needs to be fixed as the season progresses, but pit road is one of the most difficult road environments in all of college basketball. The Lobos have done well to fill the gaps left by players who are no longer there and I think the Lobos will start the season with a convincing home win this season.
