Four-star center Xavion Staton is committed to Kevin Young and BYU Basketball

On Monday night, Las Vegas native and consensus four-star recruit Xavion Staton committed to Kevin Young and the BYU basketball program. Staton received over 30 offers during his recruitment, but he chose the Cougars over finalists UNLV, Arizona, USC, Stanford and Michigan. It's been a three-team race for the past few weeks between UNLV, Michigan and BYU. Staton also picked up offers from the likes of Creighton, Auburn, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&M, Xavier, Washington and Miami. BYU's new head coach Kevin Young and his staff have built enough of a reputation and relationship with Staton to emerge as the favorite over all of these notable programs.

Staton is ranked as the 23rd best prospect nationally by 247Sports and the second best center in the country. He is the top basketball recruit from the state of Nevada in the 2025 recruiting class. He is a top-rated four-star recruit trending toward five-star status.

Staton is listed by 247Sports as being 6'3″ tall and weighing 210 pounds. In BYU's projected roster for the 2024-2025 season, the fifth-ranked Cougars lack some size. Staton will fill that gap in spades between 2025 and 2026 – he has enough size to compete at the highest levels of college basketball.

It's Staton's athleticism and skills as a rim protector that make him the sought-after recruit he is today. Most players his size are cumbersome and slow, especially at the senior level. Staton has the ability to move his feet, catch lobs and get vertical. He can shoot down a knight in one shot, but he'll make his living on the sidelines.

Staton brings the type of athleticism to the frontcourt that BYU has rarely had in its history. He has real NBA potential. If he can develop into a scorer under Kevin Young, he has what it takes to be an NBA player.

Staton is part of a 2025 BYU basketball class that has the potential to be the best in school history and one of the top recruiting classes in the country. The Cougars are also recruiting coveted recruits AJ Dybansta and JJ Mandaquit. They already have commitments from Staton and four-star Chamberlain Burgess. For bets by all four of these players it would be 67.5 points. Last year, that would have ranked second nationally behind only Duke.

Kevin Young has completely changed the BYU basketball program's recruiting ceiling. Staton is just further proof of that.
