Alaska Airlines is once again allowing passengers to purchase SAF credit and earn miles

Based in Seattle Alaska Airlines is doubling down on its sustainability efforts by giving back a popular bonus to its frequent flyers. The carrier that says 2023 was a “test year”, allows travelers to achieve elite status through support sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

Through a partnership with Chooose Software, the program allows passengers to purchase SAF credits online and earn Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs) through the purchase. Last year, Alaska said the program was a “huge success” as it was able to support more than 500,000 gallons of SAF.

Funds from the purchases will contribute to the utilization of SAF while enabling Mileage Plan members to reach their mileage goal by the end of the year to achieve elite status for the coming year. Nearly 9% of members reportedly maxed out their $1,000 contribution last year, supporting more than half a million gallons of SAF.

The program is also linked to a feature that allows passengers to purchase SAF credit directly when booking a flight. According to the airline, travelers can choose their amount to support SAF based on a percentage of their trip's estimated emissions footprint.

“All-in approach”

Diana Birkett Rakow, Alaska's senior vice president of public affairs and sustainability, spoke about the importance of SAF.

“While SAF is a critical part of the journey to decarbonize aviation, we must all work to increase supply and make it commercially viable for widespread use.” Alaska is taking a holistic approach to advancing SAF , including engaging our guests in the journey and helping them achieve their elite status goals.”

  • We're working with Microsoft to reduce emissions from business travel
  • In 2011, it became the first US airline to fly multiple routes with SAF
  • We are working with the Department of Energy and Wells Fargo Bank to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by SAF with key stakeholders
  • Entered into an agreement with E-Jet company Twelve to collaborate and operate the first commercial flight using E-Jet fuel made from recovered carbon
  • Entered into an agreement with Shell Aviation to expand the SAF market and deepen understanding of the support needed to scale its offering

Alaska has set a long-term goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040. As part of its EverGreen journey, the airline's five-part journey to achieve this goal includes: operational efficiency, fleet modernization, SAF, new technology and cutting-edge technologies.
