The weather in Texas is clearing and cooling for Election Day

A cold front moved across most of Texas overnight with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The front will continue to move through the rest of Texas this morning. Showers and a few storms remain possible this morning along the Texas Gulf Coast, deep South Texas and the eastern quarter of Texas. The chance of rain will end statewide this afternoon with clearing skies. It will feel like a fall day too! If you go to the polls, the weather is not bad this afternoon.

Wet weather returns to Texas on Thursday

Our active lull in weather will be relatively short-lived, ending Wednesday evening. Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning all look to be active as our next upper level storm system arrives. Rain chances will be highest across the western half of Texas on Thursday, Thursday evening and Friday morning. From Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, the chance of rain will be highest across the eastern half of Texas. Some wet snow could mix with rain in the western Texas Panhandle and West Texas on Thursday. Stronger storms with hail may also occur at times on Thursday and Friday. We will continue to monitor the potential for severe thunderstorms as we approach late in the week.

Wet weather returns to Texas on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The heaviest rainfall will likely occur in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, Big Country, Northwest Texas, Texoma and North Texas regions, where several inches of rain may fall.

Tropical Storm Rafael is moving toward the Gulf of Mexico

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Rafael is near Jamaica this morning. On Wednesday it will track northwest over Cuba as a hurricane before moving northwest into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday. We cannot rule out Rafael attempting to move into the western Gulf of Mexico later this week. However, conditions will not be conducive to a significant tropical system directly impacting Texas. Even if it approaches our coast, it will be ripped apart by our cold front by the end of the week. If we do have any weather-related impacts, it will be in the form of increased humidity and rain chances that will continue into Saturday across the southeastern third of Texas.
