Former boss suddenly finds himself available for a reunion after falling out with rivals

Former boss suddenly finds himself available for a reunion after falling out with rivals

Tuesday marks the NFL trade deadline and many eyes are on the Kansas City Chiefs to see if they will make any last-minute moves. The Chiefs are off to a perfect 8-0 start to the season and are looking for a possible third straight Super Bowl victory. Therefore, it wouldn't be a surprise if general manager Brett Veach wants to add even more depth to head coach Andy Reid's arsenal.

However, the trade market isn't the only way for the Chiefs to add another player or two. It's the time of the NFL season when teams cut veteran players who no longer fit their plans, meaning Kansas City could opt to sign some free agents instead of trading away draft picks for help .

If the Chiefs want to add another player to the roster, the perfect option is now available.

On Tuesday, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Buffalo Bills are releasing veteran safety Mike Edwards. According to Pelissero, the former 2019 third-rounder was granted his release after requesting it from Bills management, which will happen subject to a trade on Tuesday.

Chiefs fans are very familiar with Edwards.

After beginning his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the former Kentucky/Hawaii product signed a one-year contract with Kansas City prior to the 2023 season. He racked up 39 solo tackles, seven passes defended and two interceptions without missing a single playoff or postseason game, playing a role in the franchise's recent Super Bowl victory.

Edwards' performance in 2023 earned him a one-year deal with the Bills this offseason. However, much to his dismay, his role on his new team was virtually non-existent. He appeared in just three of Buffalo's first nine games, playing just seven defensive snaps and playing 13 on special teams.

Even though the Bills are having a solid season, it's clear that Edwards craves more responsibility. Although the Chiefs are already well positioned defensively, the veteran defensive back could find opportunities to play in the secondary considering Nazeeh Johnson is still dealing with a concussion while Jaylen Watson is likely out the rest of the year due to one due to a broken ankle.

Given that the 2023 season was one of the best of his NFL career, it wouldn't be shocking if Edwards was open to reuniting with the Chiefs. Not only could the move to Kansas City lead to more playing time, but the Chiefs also offer him the best chance to win his third championship ring.
