Here's a recent football story from the AP:

The first Champions League team will reach 10 points this week and likely secure a place in the knockout rounds as the untested 36-team table format reaches the halfway point.

Either Liverpool or Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen will have 10 points after they meet at Anfield on Tuesday, while Manchester City can also achieve that by winning at Sporting Lisbon, still coached by Rúben Amorim until he leaves for Manchester a week later United changes.

English teams hold the top three places in the table, with recent European champions Man City and Liverpool eyeing surprise leaders Aston Villa.

Villa, European Cup winners in 1982, will be aiming for a fourth straight win at Club Brugge on Wednesday.

Much further down the table, the two teams with the most titles in the competition's 70-year history meet in Spain – both led by Carlo Ancelotti.

The 15-time record champions Real Madrid welcome AC Milan with seven titles. After three of the eight rounds, the teams in 12th and 25th place will meet on Tuesday.

The new format only sends the best eight teams straight to the round of 16 in January. Teams ranked 9th through 16th are seeded in the knockout playoff round in February against teams ranked 17th through 24th. The winners of these two matches will advance to the round of 16 in March.

UEFA's simulations before the season showed that just eight points from eight games would be enough to advance to the knockout phase.

Nevertheless, the surprising defeats of Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern have shown how predictions can be turned upside down.

Unbalanced schedules

All 36 teams were given a balanced list of opponents by drawing two teams from each of the four seeding pots based on UEFA competition results from the last five years.

However, the order of games can be one-sided and Leipzig sits with zero points after defeats against three top-ranked opponents. Leipzig now plays at Celtic, the third-placed number 3 team.

Sporting are also a Pot 3 team and give Man City a third, lower-ranked opponent in the first half of their schedule.

Liverpool have excelled despite an extensive fixture list. Leverkusen is his third high-profile opponent, with Real Madrid next up at Anfield on November 27th.

Atlético Madrid has underperformed in 27th place and faces Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, but the three-time defeated finalists have one of the weakest schedules ahead of them.

Sliding doors

Xabi Alonso could have been in the home team's dugout on Tuesday. Liverpool offered their former star midfielder, a Champions League winner in the epic 2005 final, the chance to succeed Jurgen Klopp this season.

Alonso decided to stay at Leverkusen and lead the undefeated Bundesliga champions into the Champions League. Liverpool turned to Feyenoord's Arne Slot, who is off to a historically good start with the Premier League leaders.

Rúben Amorim works against Manchester City on Tuesday, just weeks after he was linked as the club's new manager.

Pep Guardiola's future plans are unclear as his contract expires next year and Man City have already announced that their director of football next season will be Amorim's current front office boss at Sporting, Hugo Viana.

Dominant English

Played 12 times, won 10 times, drew 2 times, lost none.

The four English teams have not conceded a goal since the third minute of the opening round, when AC Milan's Christian Pulisic scored in Liverpool's 3-1 win at the San Siro.

The English Premier League uses its financial strength to its advantage and this result ratio will earn it a bonus for a fifth participation in the competition next year.

Man City and Arsenal return to Europe after defeats at the weekend. Guardiola's team will be looking to avoid a rare third defeat in a row against in-form Sporting's Viktor Gyökeres. The Swedish striker spent five seasons on loan with lower-tier teams in Germany and England before joining Sporting last year.

Arsenal return to Italy to face Inter Milan after starting with a 0-0 draw against Atalanta in nearby Bergamo.

Surprising French

Few saw this in the four-man French challenge. Monaco and Brest are unbeaten in fourth and fifth place, with Lille in the top half of the table and PSG behind them.

Brest will face one of its worst-ranked opponents again on Wednesday at Sparta Prague. In the second half there are games against Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Monaco have already beaten Barcelona and now go to Bologna, who are among four teams yet to score.

Lille hosts Juventus on Tuesday at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, where Real Madrid were stunned 1-0 a month ago.
