Election polls 2024: How men and women vote in key swing states

The gender gap is considered a crucial factor in the presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Both candidates sought to use the distance to their advantage, with Harris making reproductive freedom a centerpiece of her campaign while Trump focused heavily on motivating men to vote.

Men and women have long voted differently in presidential elections, with the gender gap averaging 19 points in exit polls since 1996. But several pollsters told ABC News that they expect a “gender gap” to be at the top of the list this year, given the contrast between a man and a woman, as well as the importance of abortion rights as an issue following the overturn of Roe vs. Calf.

Preliminary results from exit poll data, which are subject to change as polls are updated throughout election night, shed light on the voting preferences of men and women in key swing states.

ABC News did not project a winner in these races.

Georgia

In Georgia, preliminary results showed Harris with a 7-point lead over Trump among women: 53% support versus 46% for Trump.

Compared to 2020 election polls, Harris is slightly behind President Joe Biden among women. Women voted for Biden by 9 percentage points. Biden ultimately swept the state for the first time in decades, eking out a narrow victory over Trump there by fewer than 12,000 votes.

Trump has a 12-point lead among men in Georgia, preliminary results show: 55% to Harris' 43%. That's the same gap he had there against Biden in the 2020 election.

Among younger voters ages 18 to 29, women lead Harris by 29 points. Meanwhile, among men in the same age group, Trump only has a 2-point lead.

North Carolina

In North Carolina, preliminary results show that women are 13 points ahead of Harris and men are 15 points ahead of Trump.

According to election polls, the gender gap is much larger than in 2020. Biden won there among women by 7 points, while Trump won among men by 9 points.

Among younger voters, Harris has a 33-point lead among women, while Trump has a 23-point lead among men.

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania — a battleground seen as a potential tipping point state — Harris leads among women by 12 points: 55% compared to Trump's 43%.

Trump's lead among men is slightly higher: among men it is 14 points: 56% compared to Harris's 42%.

Again, preliminary poll results show that the gender gap is larger between Harris and Trump than between Biden and Trump. In 2020, women voted for Biden by 11 points and men voted for Trump by 11 points.

Women ages 18 to 29 have a 40-point lead for Harris, while Trump has a 24-point lead among men in that age group.
