Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are hoping to win Nevada and secure the six electoral votes.

In the past two presidential elections, the state voted for the Democratic Party candidate, with President Joe Biden winning by a narrow margin of about 2.4 percent in 2020 and Hilary Clinton winning by about 2 percent in 2016.

According to CNN forecasts, with 2 percent of votes counted, Trump was ahead of Harris with 73 percent of the vote.

In the run-up to the 2024 election, polls consistently showed a neck-and-neck race between Trump and Harris, with each polling at around 47 percent in the week before Election Day.

Nevada is one of seven swing states that both parties have targeted in hopes of winning the six Electoral College votes that could help them surpass the 270 mark needed to win the White House .

Which presidential candidate did Nevada voters choose in 2016 and 2020?

In 2016, Nevada voted for former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. The Democrat won with 47.9 percent of the vote, compared to Trump's 45.5 percent, thanks to just two of 17 electoral districts: Washoe and Clark. They are home to nearly 90 percent of the state's population.

The state remained blue in 2020, with Biden winning with 50.1 percent of the vote to Trump's 47.7 percent, again less than the two counties that include Reno and Las Vegas, respectively.

As of September 2020, 741,963 people were registered as Democratic voters, while 626,143 joined the Republican Party. Nonpartisan voters accounted for just over 473,000.

At the same point this year, the share of nonpartisan voters had risen to over 825,000, while Republican support rose to 673,828. The Democratic Party had lost committed voters to 718,625.

The economy and affordable housing are two big issues on the minds of Nevada voters, as housing costs have risen 50 percent since 2019 in Reno and broader Washoe County. Almost 20 percent of tenants are considered extremely low-income.

Another important political issue is education, with calls for better funding of public schools and improvements in vocational training.

The countermeasures included exempting diapers from sales tax, removing slavery as a form of punishment in the state constitution and enshrining the right to abortion in the document.

More than half of Nevada's eligible voters cast their votes early. Of the more than 540,000 votes cast, 45.5 percent were Republicans and 27.7 percent were Democrats. As with all mail-in ballots, it is unclear who each person voted for. And early voting is not always an indication of the final outcome of the vote.

Trump made more stops in Nevada than Harris

Trump held at least four rallies in Nevada during the campaign, including three in Las Vegas and one in Reno. Harris has only been there twice: Reno on October 31st and Las Vegas on August 10th.
