What's at stake for Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Election Day?

“How amazing is it that a kid from Butte, Neb., and a kid from Oakland, Calif. – middle class kids, she with a single mother trying to buy a house, me with a father dying, when I'm a “I'm a teenager and my little brother is in elementary school, my mom is a stay-at-home mom – but because of what this country has given us and the opportunities, we will be the next president and vice president of the United States,” Walz said.

A Harris-Walz victory in Tuesday's general election would be historic nationwide and in Minnesota. Harris would be the first woman elected president of the United States. And elevating Walz would clear the way for Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan to become Minnesota's first woman and first Native American governor.

A defeat would send Walz back to Minnesota to finish his second term as governor. The governor's office will not be up for re-election until 2026.

Back in Minnesota, some voters were buzzing about the possibility of Vice President Walz.

As he walked into the Capri Theater polling station in north Minneapolis on Tuesday, Mike Knowlen said he would vote for Harris because he couldn't bear the thought of another Trump presidency. If Harris wins, Knowlen said, he would be disappointed to lose Walz as governor.

“He’s great, I love this guy,” Knowlen said. “He seems like the kind of guy you could actually go out for a beer with, which of course shouldn't be the criteria for choosing your vice president, but it certainly seems to help, you know what I mean? Someone you can relate to.”
