Live Georgia 2024 election results: Raffensperger says Trump's lead is 'insurmountable'

Georgia is considered a key battleground in this year's presidential election after going blue in 2020 for the first time in decades.

The winner in the state receives his 16 electoral votes.

Polls in the swing state are now closed.

State significance

In 2016, Georgia chose Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, although by a narrower margin than previous Republican candidates. In 2020, President Joe Biden flipped the reliably red state blue by about 12,000 votes out of more than 5 million cast.

Trump challenged the 2020 results, but an initial risk-limiting audit in which counties hand-counted every vote cast confirmed Biden's victory. The former president is currently facing eight criminal charges in Georgia over alleged attempts to recoup his loss there.

Late Tuesday evening, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, R, said at a news conference that “Donald Trump has an insurmountable lead in the number of outstanding votes.”

“It looks like this is pretty much done,” he said. “I think the results are pretty well entrenched.”

Campaigns for the state include Democrat Lucy McBath's bid for a fourth term, Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is seeking re-election, and a former Trump adviser, Brian Jack, who is running for Congress for the first time.

The state also helped Democrats gain control of the U.S. Senate by winning both runoff elections in 2020. However, there are no Senate elections in Georgia this year.

Counties are colored red or blue when the percentage of expected votes reaches a set threshold. This threshold varies by state and is based on past voting reporting patterns and expectations about how voting will occur this year.
