“Woke up this morning with a dream…went to bed with a nightmare.”

Political commentator at CNN Van Jones was close to tears Tuesday night as the 2024 presidential election continued to elude the vice president Kamala Harris.

“I'm thinking about the non-elite people who are feeling bad tonight,” Jones told his colleagues as a former president Donald Trump approached victory:

There are African American women who know a little about being talked down to, who know a little about having their economic dreams crushed, who have been trying to dream a big dream for the last few months, and tonight they are taking action with a lot of hope for a lot of pain, and they hoped that maybe this time, this time, one of them could be seen as worthy. And once again they face rejection, and that hurts.

They thought they'd walk out tomorrow morning with their shoulders back a little, maybe able to breathe for the first time and feeling like they belonged somewhere. They did everything they knew how to do, and it's going to be harder for them to hold their heads up tomorrow than it should be, and they're not the only people hurting tonight. If you are a parent of a trans child, your child's face has been used as a springboard to gain power for someone. That doesn't feel good.

He continued: “Tomorrow there will be people giving clothes on the dryer to people who have no documents. There will be people who will brush their teeth tomorrow and have no papers. And they’re terrified tonight.”

Jones concluded: “So it's easy to dismiss that: 'Oh, look at the elites, they're going to get their punishment.' It is not the elites who will pay the price. These are people who woke up this morning with a dream and are going to bed with a nightmare.”

As Jones made his remarks, CNN's election results tracker showed Trump had 246 electoral votes to Harris' 187. CNN's tracker also showed Trump received 51.2% of the popular vote to Harris' 47.2%.

Jones is no stranger to nearly breaking down in tears live on air. In July alone, the CNN commentator made two comments about the president Joe Biden's Withdrawal from the race. A few weeks earlier, Jones was close to tears when he suggested replacing Biden.

In November 2020, Jones also broke down in tears after Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
