Sheldon Park shooting victim identified as Harrison man; Suspect in custody

A man was shot in the Sheldon Park neighborhood of Harrison on Tuesday afternoon, according to Allegheny County police.

The victim was identified as Jaysen Randall, 20, of Harrison, according to the county coroner's office.

Allegheny County Housing Authority Police Chief Mike Vogel confirmed that one person was in custody in connection with the shooting. He said it was a verbal altercation between two men that led to gunfire.

A call came in about 12:50 p.m. reporting a shooting in the 300 block of Park Avenue, an Allegheny County 911 dispatcher said.

Randall was taken to a hospital where he died, county police said.

Several neighbors told TribLive that the gunman argued with Randall at the front door of a Sheldon Park apartment before shooting him and fleeing. A neighbor tried to apply pressure to Randall's wound before emergency medical services arrived at the scene, neighbors said.

Neither man owned or rented the apartment where the shooting occurred, Vogel said.

The Sheldon Park housing plan is managed by the Allegheny County Housing Authority and is located behind the Heights Plaza shopping center.

Vogel said the county homicide unit led the investigation.

Harrison, Tarentum, Fawn, Allegheny County police and the housing authority investigated the interior of the apartment where the shooting occurred.

Police responded to a shots fired call six days earlier near Sheldon Park. Vogel said officials do not believe the two incidents are related.

After a fatal shooting this summer, county housing authority police increased their presence at Sheldon Park and reported positive results.

“It’s so unfortunate because we’ve really made a lot of progress out there with our park and our walks,” Vogel said. “Calls have gone down, but it shows that when people have a gun and something happens and there's a confrontation, they're going to resort to the gun.”

District detectives are leading the investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Allegheny County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477). Callers can remain anonymous.
