How to vote on Election Day in Watauga County – The Appalachian

Election day is November 5th. Watauga County voters will head to the polls throughout the day on the final day of voting.

On Election Day, precincts throughout Watauga County will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. If a voter is in line in a precinct within the county before the polls close at 7:30 p.m., they are still eligible to vote.

Where can I vote on election day?

There are 20 polling locations throughout Watauga County. Voters can use them Voter search tool on the North Carolina State Board of Elections website to determine their assigned voting district.

Voters must vote in their assigned precincts on Election Day.

The electoral districts are as follows:

  • Todd Fire Department, 11062 NC Highway 194 N., Todd.
  • Beaver Dam Fire Department, 1928 Bethel Road, Sugar Grove.
  • American Legion Building at 333 Wallingford St., Blowing Rock.
  • Laurel Fork Baptist Church, 229 Jake Storie Road.
  • Watauga County Administration Building, 814 W. King St.
  • Plemmons Student Union at 263 Locust St.
  • Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute at 372 Community College Drive.
  • Zionville Fire Station #2, 10292 US Highway 421 N., Zionville.
  • Stewart Simmons Fire Department, 191 Jakes Mountain Road, Deep Gap.
  • Cove Creek Fire Department, 193 Smith St., Vilas.
  • Meat Camp Fire Department, 4797 NC Highway 194.
  • Agricultural Conference Center at 252 Poplar Grove Road.
  • Boone Town Chambers, 1500 Blowing Rock Road.
  • Three Forks Baptist Association, 513 Jefferson Road.
  • Watauga County Recreation Center at 231 Complex Drive.

If a voter does not show up at their assigned precinct on Election Day, they may cast a vote provisional ballot in whichever district they appear on election day.

Provisional ballots are placed on unofficial rolls after Election Day, during the 10-day period in which county election boards certify the results following an election.

How do I vote on election day?

When voters arrive at their precinct on Election Day, they will present acceptable identification to a poll worker. Voters must be registered to vote on Election Day.

The list of allowed IDs includes:

  • North Carolina driver's license
  • US passport
  • State and local employee ID cards
  • Student ID cards
  • Military ID cards
  • Veteran IDs
  • Tribal cards

AppCards are acceptable forms of student ID cards. Voters can also fill out a voter exemption form if they cannot provide acceptable identification.

Voters can also obtain an ID card from their county's Department of Motor Vehicles or elections office. For steps to obtain a free voter ID, visit the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.

After presenting their ID, a poll worker confirms the voter's information and asks them to fill out a form to authorize them to vote. After signing the form, the voter receives their ballot and votes at one of the county's voting booths.

After filling out their ballot, voters enter their ballot into a tabulator at the precinct, which counts their ballot.
