Kamala Harris is accused of using her camera app to fake a “thank you” call to a supporter

Democratic candidate Kamala Harris raised eyebrows on the social media site formerly called Twitter after a video posted by MSNBC showed her making a thank-you call to an apparent voter in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, drawing critics for considered a fake.

At one point, the vice president waved her phone face-out in front of a cheering crowd, revealing that the camera was on and set to selfie mode. It is unclear exactly what the situation was. Maybe Harris clumsily faked a phone call and forgot to cover up the lie. Or maybe it was a video call where she showed whoever was on the other end the crowd at her headquarters. People who opposed Harris on X certainly came to the former conclusion.

“How are you? Have you voted yet? You did it? Thank you!” Harris said into her iPhone.

The crowd in the D.C. phone bank that attended Harris immediately began applauding when they heard her say “Thank you!” A smiling Harris then held her cell phone out to the audience. Then she started talking on her phone again.

“Thank you. No, it’s so important that everyone participates,” Harris said. “And thank you, because I’m sure you have many other things you could do.”

You can watch the moment captured in MSNBC's live Election Day coverage in the X post below, and see some of the, er, skeptical responses below:

As expected, several X users commented on the fake call on Tuesday.

You have the idea.

In other Election Day news, Google had to fix an issue that showed a polling location to users who searched “where can I vote for Harris” but not to users who searched “where can I vote for Trump.” And if you were relying on tracking the New York Times' election needle to judge how the vote is going, you could be out of luck thanks to a tech workers' strike.
