Tyrone Mings makes unwanted Champions League history with a faux pas on his nightmare debut after Arsenal got away with an incident

Tyrone Mings had a moment to forget on his Champions League debut after suffering a severe brain injury in the Aston Villa penalty area.

Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez took a goal kick early in the second half and passed it on to defender Mings.

But Mings, who probably didn't hear referee Tobias Stieler's whistle, picked up the ball, put it on the grass and passed it to Martinez.

Unfortunately for Mings, Stieler had actually whistled for the goal kick and seconds later blew it again to signal a penalty, prompting confused reactions from the entire Villa team.

Despite the protests, Stieler remained unmoved Club Brugge's Hans Vanaken stepped up and shot the ball down the middle to give the Belgians a surprise 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.

Mings, who was booked in the first half and perhaps had some luck in avoiding a second yellow card for handball, was substituted for Pau Torres just 14 minutes later.

Unfortunately for Mings, the penalty also meant he became the first Englishman to concede a penalty on his Champions League debut.

Vanaken's goal ultimately proved to be the difference between the two as Villa suffered their first Champions League defeat.

The 18-time England international will have felt aggrieved that his catastrophic error was picked up by the referee, as Arsenal defender Gabriel got away with exactly the same offense last season.

Gabriel picked up a pass from David Raya during the Gunners' Champions League game against Bayern Munich in April.

However, the Brazilian defender claimed he was innocent as he believed the ball was out of play despite the referee blowing the whistle to restart play.

Bayern were leading the game 2-1 at this point, but fortunately for the Gunners they recovered to secure a 2-2 draw Leandro Trossard.

Former Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel After the game, he vented his anger and was upset that the referee saw the incident but did not punish Gabriel.

“I think the referee didn’t have the courage today to award a deserved penalty in a somewhat crazy and unpleasant situation,” Tuchel said TNT Sports.

“But he admitted on the pitch that he recognized the situation, but the quarter-final was not enough for him to give a penalty for a childish mistake.”

Aston Villa fan criticizes Jhon Duran for his reaction to being substituted by Unai Emery in the Champions League

“So he admitted he knew about the player's mistake, which is a bit frustrating.”

Tuchel added: “What really makes us angry is the statement on the pitch. He told our players it was a 'child's mistake' and he wouldn't give a penalty for it in a Champions League quarter-final.”

“It’s a terrible, terrible explanation. A child’s mistake, an adult’s mistake, whatever – we’re angry because it was a big decision against us.”
