A forest fire forces the evacuation in Jackson, 25 buildings are threatened

JACKSON — A multi-acre wildfire began burning Wednesday afternoon, threatening buildings and forcing evacuations, authorities said.

According to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the fire started in the area of South Stump Tavern Road in Jackson Township. The evacuation of 15 buildings on the street is underway, with a total of 25 at risk.

Crews are conducting a backfire operation, selectively burning fuel in the path of the fire to slow its advance and aid containment efforts, the service said. As of 1:45 p.m., the fire was zero percent contained and was believed to be contained to approximately 300 acres.

The community is preparing the Jackson Senior Center on Don Connor Boulevard for the possible evacuation of up to six homes in the Park Crest Drive project, Mayor Michael Reina said.

“I hope it’s a big nothing and everyone can go home safely,” he said.

According to fire officials, South Stump Tavern Road is closed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

According to the US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly, this October was the driest on record, resulting in a very high fire danger. In October, Forest Fire Department responded to 507 incidents statewide.

“When conditions get this dry, the simplest things can start a forest fire,” said Bill Donnelly, state forest firefighter and chief of the Forest Fire Service. “In my 30-year career with the Forest Fire Department, I can’t remember a time when we experienced such a long dry spell with no relief in sight.”

Mandatory statewide Stage 3 fire restrictions prohibit all fires unless they are contained to an elevated furnace that uses only propane, natural gas or electricity, the service said. No wood or charcoal fires are permitted and the use of kerosene or gas torches of any kind is prohibited during this restriction level.
