The Rockets beat the Spurs behind Fred VanVleet's historically efficient play

HOUSTON – The Rockets ended their three home games at the Toyota Center with a commanding 127-100 (box score) win over the visiting San Antonio Spurs. Overall, Houston has now won four of its last five games.

Due to a timing quirk, it was the third meeting between the longtime Texas rivals within the first eight games of the 2024-25 NBA season – with Houston winning two of the three games. The Rockets are now 5-3 while San Antonio is 3-5.

The Rockets were led on Wednesday by veteran guard Fred VanVleet, who posted a team-high 21 points and 10 assists while hitting an extremely efficient 10 of 11 shots (90.9% FG). VanVleet became the first NBA guard since 2003 to score at least 20 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds in a game while shooting at least 90% from the field.

The Rockets' other standout performances included:

• Jalen Green: 21 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists; 4 of 9 on 3-point shots (44.4%)

• Alperen Sengun: 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks; 8 out of 15 shots (53.3%)

• Tari Eason: 12 points, 4 rebounds in 22 minutes; 5-of-7 shooting (71.4%)

• Jock Landale: 11 points, 6 rebounds in 18 minutes

• Amen Thompson: 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals in 24 minutes; 4-of-4 shooting (100%)

Prized junior Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks, although the Rockets' stout defense forced the 7-foot-3 big man to make 6 of 14 shots (42.9%) and just 1 of – 6 from 3-point range (16.7%). Houston also forced the French phenom into a team-high four turnovers.

For the entire game, Houston had 28 assists with 11 turnovers and shot 56.3% overall. The Spurs had 20 assists on 19 turnovers and were limited to a shooting percentage of 44.6%.

What's next?

The Rockets will now leave Houston for two road games, the first coming Friday at Oklahoma City. Tip-off against the Thunder (7-0) will take place at 7:00 p.m. Central.

The Spurs host the Portland Trail Blazers (3-5) on Thursday in what will be the second night of a back-to-back split.
