Chicago Police Department's Marina Squerciati reveals whether Burgess will be Voight's right-hand man after she's made detective

Kim Burgess is officially starting her detective era Chicago PD — but that doesn't mean she's ready to be Hank Voight's right-hand man.

Warning: Spoilers for Chicago PD Season 12, Episode 6.

“I would like to fill this role, but differently” Marina Squerciatiwho plays Burgess, tells exclusively Us weekly on Monday, November 4, about her character's connection to Voight (Jason Beghe) after he became a detective. “I don’t want to be his confidant. I don’t want to fill a hole.”

Squerciati, 40, explained that Burgess “didn't feel like he was (her) father figure,” pointing out that many of Voight's former deputies had intense relationships with him. (Sophia BushErin Lindsay was raised in part by Voight and his late wife Tracy SpiridakosHailey Upton became a daughter-like figure to Voight after his son's death.)

“I feel like equal isn't the right word, but let me just use it here to mean that they really respect and like each other,” Squerciati said of Burgess and her boss. “Now that she’s playing the role of detective, it would be interesting to explore what their relationship might look like.”

During the Wednesday, November 6th episode of Chicago PD, Burgess passed her written and oral detective exams with flying colors before being shadowed by an active detective to see if she would pass and be promoted.

When Burgess took on a scene related to a previous intelligence case, she turned to her team to help her solve the case. There were a few hiccups along the way – and Burgess almost died after breaking up with her mentor Suarez (Elizabeth Rodríguez) – she realized how important Voight was to her development. (Suarez claimed that Voight always covers the “ass” of Burgess and the rest of his team, which she said makes Burgess a little soft.)

“I think it's the first time she understands this kind of shield that Voight has around the team,” Squerciati said Usreferring to Detective Suarez's jab. “She never understood that it was only because of Voight that she could become the police officer she is.”

The actress added that Suárez's harsh assessment “stole some of the joy of her victory” when she was working as a detective.

Looking ahead, Squerciati noted that now that Burgess is a detective with the Intelligence Unit, she will have a “nagging voice” about that safety net in the back of her mind. Despite the doubts, Squerciati said Us that not much will change in the way Burgess works with her fiancé Adam Ruzek (Patrick Wing) or the rest of the team.

“You know, when people have a good relationship and get married (and) people ask, 'What's different?' And you say, ‘Nothing.’ It’s exactly the same,” Squerciati explained. “The team is so strong and Burgess is so strong, I don’t think anything will change.”

However, Burgess will have “more power.” Squerciati noted that her longtime collaborators, including Ruzek and Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), are “strong enough” to have a “tough boss”.

She teased that the guys “maybe sometimes over a beer they'll say, 'Yo, you got a little over your skis today.'” (And) I'll say, “Okay, you're right.” But other than that (it will not change).”

Squerciati admitted that it would be “terrible” if Burgess became “power-hungry” once she received her badge, confirming that the character is “strong” and “still the person she is” after the promotion.

Chicago PD airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
