Amazon customers near the company's Tolleson facility now have the option to have a package delivered by drone, a feature the company introduced Tuesday.

For eligible deliveries weighing less than five pounds, customers can opt for drone delivery within the delivery area and receive their items in under an hour.

The option carries an additional fee of $9.99 for Prime members and $14.99 for non-Prime members. Drone delivery, if available, will be listed in the delivery options when a person purchases their items.

Amazon already uses drones to deliver medications through Amazon Pharmacy in College Station, Texas.

The drone is called the MK30 and has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing the automated aircraft to fly beyond line of sight.

Over 50,000 items are eligible for drone drops, but only one item is delivered per order. If a person orders multiple items, the item with the highest price in the order will be delivered by drone.

Amazon announced plans to launch drone delivery in Tolleson in April. At the time, Tolleson Mayor Juan F. Rodriguez said drone deliveries would occur within a seven-mile radius of the Amazon facility.
