NMDOT has prepared its personnel and equipment to meet the needs of law enforcement and emergency responders. NMDOT will cooperate with emergency response by tailoring our efforts to any possible traffic disruptions we may encounter.

Traffic updates will be posted on the NMDOT traffic advisory website at http://nmroads.com as they are reported and can be accessed through our automated system at 511 statewide or 1-800-432-4269.

Worth knowing:

  • REDUCE YOUR SPEED
    • The best way to prevent accidents on snow and ice is to slow down and leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front of you in case of emergencies.
  • PRACTICE GOOD RIDING TECHNIQUES IN WINTER
    • Keep your gas tank full, turn on your headlights, make sure your windshield washer fluid is filled with antifreeze, keep winter tracks in your vehicle, have a winter survival kit on hand that includes: flashlight, hand warmer packs, first aid kits. Help articles and high-energy snacks, bottled water, medications, and read your owner's manual for specific instructions on driving four-wheel drive vehicles and vehicles with ABS on snow and ice.
  • Avoid driving in a cloud of snow
    • Large vehicles such as semi-trucks and snowplows can create dense clouds of snow that make it difficult for drivers to see. If drivers encounter snow clouds, they should stand back to avoid the clouds.
  • Plan ahead and be patient
    • Delays often occur in bad weather. Leave a little early and be patient with delays.
  • CHECK BEFORE YOU PASS
    • Know where a snow plow and plow are located before attempting to overtake it. On multi-lane highways, the plow may be in the blind spot. Before you try to pass, make sure it is safe.
  • Pay attention to the weather forecasts – trust them
    • Winter storms in New Mexico can become severe quickly. Therefore, pay attention to the weather forecast when planning your trip.
  • DO NOT USE CRUISE CONTROL
    • Never use cruise control when the roads are slippery. Using your cruise control may affect your control of the vehicle if your tires skid or slip.
  • KNOW YOUR CURRENT ROAD CONDITIONS
    • For current traffic advisories, visit the NMDOT website at http://nmroads.com or call 511 in your state.
  • WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT
    • Fasten your seatbelt and make sure all passengers “buckle up” too.
