New Star Wars trilogy in the works from X-Men producer Simon Kinberg – report

In some big Star Wars news this morning, Lucasfilm is reportedly working on a new film trilogy that could serve as a sequel to the Skywalker saga… or not.

This news comes from a Deadline report on Thursday, which adds that Simon Kinberg, best known for his work as a producer on 20th Century Fox's X-Men films and co-creator of Star Wars Rebels, is writing the trilogy and will produce alongside Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm. What is a bit unclear at the moment is some contradictory information in the article; While some Deadline sources say that the new trilogy will span episodes 10-12 and continue the Skywalker saga, other sources dispute this information and say that instead it will feature a new story alongside already announced feature films from James Mangold and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is narrated by Taika Waititi and Donald Glover.

Variety published a report shortly after Deadline stating that the trilogy would actually “begin a new series after 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker concludes the Skywalker saga.” The Hollywood Reporter's reporting also states that it would be a brand new story with new characters.

Honestly, this is all a bit confusing at the moment and IGN has reached out to Disney/Lucasfilm for clarification. The Brazilian edition of the D23 Expo is taking place this weekend, so it's possible that the company would reveal some news about the Kinberg trilogy there.

While Star Wars has largely focused on the TV format since The Rise of Skywalker, with series like The Mandalorian, Andor, The Acolyte and more airing on Disney+, the pipeline of upcoming films has expanded quite significantly. First up is the Jon Favreau-directed film “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.

What we know about the other films: Mangold's will tell the story of the beginning of the Jedi, Filoni's will be set in his Mandalorian-verse, and Obaid-Chinoy's will follow the New Jedi Order, with Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey after the events from The Rise of Skywalker. If anything, it seems like the New Jedi Order movie would be the most obvious continuation of the Skywalker saga.

Glover's Lando project transformed from a TV series into a film last year, and we're all still waiting for an update on Waititi's script.

We'll have to see if anyone from Lucasfilm/Kinberg sheds light on the conflicting reports, but it's still pretty surprising news. To understand the rest, check out our breakdown of all the upcoming Star Wars movies and TV shows.
