The Lakers enjoy the “competition” between LeBron and Bronny in practice

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – After the first day of Los Angeles Lakers training camp on Tuesday, LeBron James said there was nothing left for him to achieve as a basketball player, and after four titles, four MVPs and the most points in NBA history: “Everything else is extra credit.”

It turns out that James may have overlooked a new basketball opportunity outside the record books that this Lakers season will provide: competing against his son Bronny James in practice.

Bronny, the Lakers' 19-year-old rookie, got hot on the second day of camp at his father's expense, according to Anthony Davis – which only caused his 39-year-old father to step up his game.

“It’s awesome to be able to be here and see it in practice,” Davis said. “Bronny hit a 3 over himself today. Everyone clearly spoke in Bronny's favor. Then Bron came down and just bullied someone. He just took it out on (the defender) – I forgot who it was – and got a layup. Bronny.” came down and hit another 3, I think over Austin (Reaves) and Bron wanted the ball.

“So you could see that the competition was there, even if they weren't competing against each other. And that’s what we like to see.”

Last week, during an offseason pick-up game at the practice facility, LeBron got the better of Bronny and scored at the rim after moving along the baseline – only Bronny said the basket shouldn't have counted.

“He turned on the baseline and went up and down, I jumped on the strong side board,” Bronny told ESPN. “But the referees who were reefing the play (missed it when) his foot stepped on the line a little bit. He's – he's going to get that call.

LeBron didn't disagree with Bronny's replay review.

“He said he saw the footage and I went out of bounds,” LeBron told ESPN. “So, I mean, if that's the case, then defense from him is good, but it's always better (offense from me).”

After each of the first two days of camp, reporters got a look at LeBron, Bronny and third-year guard Max Christie participating in shooting drills together at the end of practice.

It remains to be seen when LeBron and Bronny will be on the court together for the first time in a game.

LA opens its preseason schedule with six games on Friday in Palm Springs, Calif., against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said he discussed the 22-year-old veteran's advancement with Mike Mancias, LeBron's longtime athletic trainer, given the time he spent on the court during the summer at the Paris Olympics, but he declined to reveal this.

“I think we have a pretty clear plan,” Redick said. “We will share this plan when appropriate.”

However, Redick revealed another way Bronny has beaten LeBron so far in training camp: The Lakers' No. 55 ran the furthest of any player on the team on the first day of training camp, according to player surveillance cameras installed at the UCLA Health and Training Center .

Redick said, “I walked up to Bronny before practice and was like, 'Dude, you ran six miles.'”
