How 8-year-old Zoe Wilson drove safely to her destination for a shopping trip

An 8-year-old girl caused a stir online after she grabbed the keys to her family's SUV and took a joyride to Target – where she arrived safely and treated herself to a shopping spree.

On a Sunday morning in September, Zoe Wilson — angry with her sister after an argument the night before — sneaked out of her Bedford, Ohio, home with her mother Tangie's keys, wallet and ID.

In a seemingly bold act of rebellion, the third-grader jumped into the family's Nissan Rogue and drove about 10 miles to the retail chain unscathed. She brought her dog named Bear with her for the trip.

A neighboring driver captured Zoe's admittedly erratic driving on dashcam footage, where she can be seen swerving between lanes.

”Not even 30 minutes later her sister came in and asked, 'Mom, where is Zoe?' “She took the dog with her,” Tangie said The New York Times. “And I’m like, ‘She just asked for her iPad. What do you mean she's not here?'”

After a brief missing persons search, Zoe was found completely healthy while enjoying a Starbucks Frappuccino.

However, her story – and the accompanying footage – went viral on social media, leaving many people wondering how a child her age could have even made it there without hurting anyone.

Tangie said Zoe had apparently planned to steal the car the night before, but only ended up targeting Target after breaking her iPad case on the way out the door. She thought she would get a new one. (However, when she got there, she didn't know what size she needed and bought toys and makeup instead.)

Zoe had no experience driving, her mother said. “I think 90 percent of it was just her driving off using go-karts and watching me drive.”

She added that she did not strictly discipline her daughter for the joyride.

“I spoke to her and assured her that I loved her and that I didn't want anything to happen to her and how dangerous and big the situation was,” she said. “But in the future, if we went somewhere and she wanted a slushy from the store, I would tell her no as a consequence.”
