Today is the last day to register for the autumn general election

CAMBRIDGE – Today is the deadline to register for the autumn general election on November 5th.

The Guernsey County Board of Elections Office, 627 Wheeling Ave., Suite 101, is open to accept forms from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents can also register at voteohio.gov. One may also register with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the Guernsey County Public Library, the Guernsey County Treasurer's Office, public schools or vocational schools, and offices of designated agencies that provide public assistance or disability programs.

To vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 18 years old on the day of the general election, and have been a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days. One cannot be imprisoned for a felony conviction, declared unfit to vote by a probate court, or permanently disenfranchised for violating election law.

Anyone registering to vote or updating voter registration must provide either a driver's license or Ohio State ID card or the last four digits of their Social Security number.

To vote, one must present an Ohio driver's license, BMV-issued state ID card or temporary identification form, U.S. passport or passport card, or military ID card, Ohio National Guard ID card, or U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ID card.

Early voting, postal voting

Early voting begins Oct. 8 and can be done in person at Suite 101 at the Guernsey County Board of Elections, 627 Wheeling Ave.

The office is open for early voting: Oct. 8-11 and Oct. 14-18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 21-25 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Oct. 26. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 27 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 and Oct. 30 – Nov. 30 1● 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 29 ● 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. November 2nd ● 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. November 2nd

There will be no early voting on the Monday before Election Day.

The deadline for submitting an application for a postal vote by mail is October 29th.

Ballots will be mailed daily from October 8th to 29th. All mail-in ballots sent must be postmarked no later than November 4th and received no later than November 9th. Absentee ballots received by mail may also be returned to the Guernsey County Board at the elections office, Suite 101, 627 Wheeling Ave., no later than Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Local races, taxes

There is only a single competitive race in the Guernsey County general election. Incumbent Republican Paul Sherry is being challenged by Democrat Robert Heady for Guernsey County engineer.

There are several tax levies and issues on the ballot, including three statewide levies, two of which are extensions with increases. The increases include the maintenance and operations of the Countryview Assisted Living Center (formerly known as the Guernsey County Home) at 1.0 million and an increase of 0.5 million to a total of 1.5 million, the Senior Services of Guernsey County Senior Citizens Center, Inc. and the Robert T. Secrest Senior Center at 1.5 million, up 0.3 million to a total of 1.8 million.
