Philly nurses hit by vehicle while assisting gunshot victim – NBC10 Philadelphia

Several nurses were injured after they were struck by a vehicle outside Penn Presbyterian Medical Center while trying to help a gunshot victim who was being dropped off, police said.

According to Philadelphia police Lt. Shaun Butts, someone in a gray Jeep Cherokee dropped off a gunshot victim – a 28-year-old man – at the emergency entrance to the hospital at 3900 Poweltown Ave. early Saturday morning.

Three nurses tried to give the man first aid, but then the Jeep hit them all and drove off.

A spokesperson for Penn Medicine released a statement about the incident, saying one nurse was in critical condition and two other nurses were in stable condition.

The statement read in part:

“One nurse is hospitalized in a critical condition and two others were also treated for injuries. In a workplace where teams are solely concerned with caring for others, this incident is devastating for our employees and reminds us of the tragic, far-reaching consequences of gun violence against entire communities. Violence against healthcare workers harms us all and is a devastating, unacceptable threat that our staff must deal with every day. Our heroic staff continued to work to save the gunshot victim and also care for all of our other patients. As their own colleagues suffered and received treatment, we are providing support resources for them and the families of the injured nurses and are cooperating fully with the investigation Philadelphia Police.

Police identify the nurses as:

  • A 37-year-old man who suffered injuries to his legs and is in a stable condition.
  • A 51-year-old man who suffered injuries to his head and back and is in a stable condition.
  • A 36-year-old man who suffered facial injuries and internal bleeding. He is listed in critical condition.

The gunshot victim — who was in the 1300 block of Belmont Ave. Was shot multiple times – is now in the hospital. According to police, he also suffered another head injury as the Jeep fled the scene.

The shooting happened right in front of Inquiry Charter School and Compass Self Storage. NBC10 was on scene as investigators sifted through dozens of pieces of evidence, including at least 40 that appeared to be bullet casings.

During the investigation, officers cordoned off the entrance to the emergency call center for hours.

A bloodstained shirt lay outside the front doors, and another vehicle with a shot out rear window was towed from the scene.

Police said they are actively searching for the Jeep and its driver.

Anyone with information about the shooting or accident is asked to call the Philadelphia Police Department hotline at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
