'SNL' Sketch Brings Democrats and Republicans Together for 'Family Feud'

Less than a month before the presidential election, “Saturday Night Live” pits Democrats against Republicans in a “Family Feud” sketch in its latest episode.

The game show setup was decidedly tamer than some of his politically themed skits and jokes of recent weeks, and provided a good platform to showcase “SNL's” election ensemble — Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg as Harris' husband Doug Emhoff, Jim Gaffigan as Harris' Vice President Governor Tim Walz, Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden, James Austin Johnson as former President Donald Trump, Bowen Yang as Senator JD Vance and Mikey Day as Donald Trump Jr.

Kenan Thompson's Steve Harvey led the game and asked participants to name things found in a glove compartment. Rudolph's Harris and Samberg's Emhoff quickly got the two best answers on the board and answered “weapon” and “second weapon” respectively.

Perhaps the most hilarious response came from Gaffigan, who responded as Walz: “Hot Hands, Runza napkins and I have to have Tums in case I eat something spicy like a tomato.”

Johnson's Trump also drew laughter from the audience, joking at one point: “I say a lot of different things, but it all comes together so beautifully, like an episode of 'Seinfeld.'

The skit was the third consecutive “SNL” cold open devoted to politics, with somewhat regressive results when it came to humor. But “SNL” boss Lorne Michaels was open about the show’s political plans before the start of the season, which now has three episodes.

“You can't lecture the audience, which is largely the case in politics these days, with people lecturing the audience. Our opinion is, 'Yes, there are idiots on both sides,'” Michaels said last month. “It has to be a comedy. We’re a comedy show first and foremost.”

Ariana Grande returned to host Saturday's new episode, with musical guest Stevie Nicks.
