Jason Kelce reveals what NFL rule change he would like to see next

Long-range field goals are nobody's business in the NFL, and former Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce has just about had enough of them.

“Kickers make 60-yard throws routine,” Kelce said on the latest edition of his “New Heights” podcast. “We have to limit those field goal posts. It's too easy to shoot field goals right now. We have to go to the rugby goal posts. Kickers shouldn't influence football games as much as they currently do. We have to give the kickers more leeway.” less valuable.

“That’s not what football is about.”

The distance between NFL goal posts is approximately 18 feet and 5 inches, while rugby goal posts are slightly narrower at 18 feet. NFL goal posts rise 35 feet from the ground, while rugby goal posts rise 52 feet, 5 inches.

“Just throw the ball through the uprights,” Kelce added playfully. “Why does this guy have to come out here and kick things that don’t belong on the football field? … I don't want these guys going out there in football boots – and you can't touch them, and we.' I think this is a football game.

“Kudos to Jake Elliott, he’s a great kicker, I just don’t agree with everything.”

Elliott is 4-of-5 on extra points this season and has a perfect 8-for-8 record on extra points. His longest field goal to date came from 38 yards, but Elliott has made two 61-yard field goals in his career and is 26 of 38 in his career on field goals over 50 yards.

Kelce, a six-time All-Pro, retired after the 2023 season and a 13-year career spent exclusively with the Eagles. He hosts “New Heights” with his brother, Kansas City Chiefs star and four-time All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce.

The younger Kelce got off to a slow start this season, recording just 24 receptions for 228 yards and zero touchdowns. The undefeated Chiefs (5-0) have kicker Harrison Butker in their arsenal. Butker is 12 of 14 this season for 53 yards. He made a 62-yard field goal in 2022 and is 30 of 44 (68.2%) field goals over 50 yards in his career.
