Billy Corgan and Chloe Mendel Corgan prepare for the New York City Ballet's Fall Fashion Gala

Billy Corgan and Chloe Mendel Corgan rarely wear black tie when they go out, but Wednesday's fall fashion gala at New York City Ballet was a special occasion: Mendel Corgan's father, Gilles Mendel, was the designer of this year's gala costumes.

The couple, who are currently expecting their third child, got ready for their House of Gilles looks in a suite at The Mark Hotel.

“Billy has been on tour most of this year, so we're really looking forward to a night out where it's just the two of us, especially with our third child on the way,” Mendel Corgan said of her frontman husband by The Smashing is pumpkins. “Tonight is very special because it is dedicated to my father Gilles, who designed the costumes for the world premiere of the New York City Ballet Fashion Gala chaired by Sarah Jessica Parker. Billy often misses important family moments, so having him here with me and the family means the world to me. And of course we will both be wearing haute couture from House of Gilles.”

Mendel Corgan's look, a black empire waist dress, was chosen to match her pregnancy, while Corgan took the opportunity to pull out his custom-made tuxedo from his wedding, which his father-in-law had made for him.

“Billy wears a stunning tuxedo with embroidery on the suit – a family illustration he created himself,” said Mendel Corgan. “I'm wearing a pleated silk organza dress with hand-embroidered flowers that my dad designed to celebrate my pregnant belly. And to top it off, I’m wearing vintage Fred Leighton jewelry!”

The evening appealed to both to support Gilles but also to celebrate the arts.

“We have always been fascinated by the fine arts, and ballet in particular is such a beautiful combination of artistry and emotion. The choreography, the costumes, the storytelling – everything touches us,” said Mendel Corgan. “As a musician, Billy is particularly fascinated by how the music enhances the dancers and the choreography, drawing from different styles of music that create different moods and truly convey emotions through the body. For me as a designer, it's the elegance of the costumes – the way they combine beauty with the need for movement and help bring the story to life. Together, these worlds create something magical, and it was incredible watching my father work with choreographer Caili Quan to push the boundaries of traditional costume design. When artists collaborate like this, true magic happens.”
