NASCAR's Brad Moran explains Alex Bowman's stunning Roval disqualification

NASCAR disqualified Alex Bowman from the ROVAL 400, and Brad Moran explained why this move was made. After the race, the NASCAR Cup Series general manager explained what led to the disqualification of the No. 48 car.

“Unfortunately, when we went through the No. 48, it didn’t meet the minimum weight specifications,” Moran said. “We pulled the car aside and allowed them to refuel it, which they have already done. We had them refuel it, we had them run the pumps to make sure all the pickup boxes were full.

“We give teams every opportunity to try to meet the minimum weight. We also have them hook up the water and run it through the system to make sure they are filled with water and then we rescale it. Sill couldn't handle the weight. We pulled it back and ran it again to confirm the weights were correct. Unfortunately the minimum weight was not reached. You are allowed half a percent of a weight break, which is about 17 pounds, give or take. They’re allowed to do that and it was more than that.”

Will Alex Bowman and Hendrick Motorsports appeal Roval disqualification?

The disqualification is costly for Alex Bowman as he is now eliminated from the Cup Series playoffs. That means Joey Logano, who has won two Cup Series titles, will take Bowman's place and compete in the Round of 8. Bowman drives for Hendrick Motorsports and the team said it would gather more information before deciding whether or not to appeal.

“If the appeal is filed, it will be expedited, so it will likely happen in the next few days,” Moran said, according to NASCAR.com. “So I really can’t go into all the details of the information, but the car was light and that’s where we ended up.”

Bowman's No. 48 car will be returned to the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord, North Carolina, pending the outcome of the appeal process if an appeal is filed. “We are working to understand the issue and will make a decision on Monday whether to appeal,” Hendrick Motorsports said.
