Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow avoided a concussion Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

After the 17-7 win over the New York Giants, Burrow explained what happened after he suffered a serious blow that forced him to receive medical attention on the sidelines.

Burrow's head hit the turf hard when Giants defensive end Brian Burns sacked him on third down. He was immediately taken to the blue medical tent to undergo a concussion evaluation.

“They just came and told me they had to check me for a concussion,” Burrow said after the game. “It was news to me because I felt good, I just felt a little winded.”

NFL concussion protocol

The NFL has implemented a strict protocol in recent years to ensure player safety is a top priority when it comes to concussions. If a medical professional involved in any aspect of the game believes that a player needs to be evaluated for a concussion, a thorough examination will be conducted.

A player cannot be permitted to return to play until he passes the neurological examination conducted by an independent neurotrauma consultant.

Burrow's condition will be closely monitored over the next few days, but the fact that he has been able to return to the game means he has passed all initial tests to prove he did not suffer a concussion in the hit.

After going 2-4 this year with a win over New York, the Bengals will look for another win against Cleveland next Sunday. To achieve this, they need better performance on offense. And Burrow expects that to be the case.

“We’re 2-4, we’re trying to find ourselves, we’re trying to get wins,” Burrow said. “We know we have to do better in the future.”
