Meal kits sold at Trader Joe's, Target and Amazon are among 10 million pounds of meat recalled due to listeria

More than 10 million products have been recalled by major retailers, including Trader Joe's, over fears they were contaminated with listeria.

A nationwide recall has been issued for nearly 10 million pounds of meat, primarily chicken, used in prepared meals sold at Trader Joe's, Target, Walmart and Amazon.

The recalled items were revealed Monday in a 326-page list that also included packaged salads and frozen meals from Kroger, HEB and 7/11.

No illnesses or deaths Reports related to the meals have been reported so far, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirmed to DailyMail.com.

The recall was announced last week and affects products from Oklahoma-based BrucePac – which is behind a wide range of prepared meals.

The recalled foods have different best-before dates between October 2024 and 2025.

Customers are advised to check the product lot codes printed on the packaging to determine if they have been recalled. The full list of recalled products and codes can be found here.

It's at least the second major recall in the U.S. this year, after Boar's Head also recalled 7 million pounds of meat in late July because of listeria contamination.

Two people died and at least 13 became seriously ill in this outbreak.

It's not clear how the ready-to-eat meals became contaminated with listeria, but the bacteria could have entered the factory via a product such as an improperly washed chicken breast.

Then, during processing, the bacteria may have entered a machine and begun to multiply – and that machine spread them to other food products.

Consumers were encouraged to also check the recalled products for the establishment number “51205” or “P-51205” located either in the packaging or directly under the USDA inspection mark.

Listeria infections can be life-threatening for pregnant women, people over 65, or people with weakened immune systems.

People can become infected with the bacteria by eating contaminated food and tend to experience symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, vomiting and diarrhea within one to four weeks of infection.

In severe cases, the bacteria can spread into the bloodstream and brain – increasing the risk of sepsis and encephalitis, as well as inflammation and swelling in the brain.

Pregnant women may experience miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature birth of a newborn.

In healthy adults with no underlying medical conditions, Listeria can cause a brief illness that lasts a few days.

According to the CDC, about 1,600 people in the United States become infected with listeria each year, and 260 people die from the infection annually.

In its recall notice, FSIS said: “FSIS is concerned that some products may be available for use in restaurants, institutions, and other facilities.”

“These… may be on store shelves or in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.”

“Restaurants, institutions and other establishments are requested not to offer or use these products.” “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
