Davante Adams moved to the Jets in a blockbuster reunion with Aaron Rodgers

Davante Adams finally becomes a jet.

A source confirmed that the Raiders and Jets are finalizing a trade for the star wide receiver, pending a physical exam. The deal calls for a conditional third-round pick that could become a second-round pick depending on performance.

This trade reunites Adams with quarterback Aaron Rodgers after months of speculation. The Jets tried to trade Adams last season, but the Raiders had no interest in moving him. Things have gotten worse between Adams and the Raiders and he requested a trade two weeks ago.

The Jets are 2-4 and have struggled offensively. Adams gives Rodgers a familiar weapon as the team tries to turn things around.

The 31-year-old six-time Pro Bowler had 18 catches for 209 yards and a touchdown in three games with the Raiders and missed the last three games with a hamstring injury.

According to ESPN, the Jets will take over the remainder of Adams' contract.

Adams has a base salary of $35.6 million left over each of the next two years, but no portion of the money is guaranteed, leaving him at risk as a cap casualty.

One could argue that trading Adams was more of a luxury than a need.

Garrett Wilson is already a certified No. 1 receiver, having posted back-to-back 100-yard games, and both Allen Lazard (four years, $44 million) and Mike Williams (one year, $10 million ) are well paid as a supplement.

The primary offensive problem appears to be protecting Rodgers.

And pass rusher Haason Reddick is still in a contract holdout dating back to his acquisition in March, although he was reportedly given permission to seek a trade.

But Rodgers and Adams couldn't be separated from each other, because both seemed to regret the separation altogether. The connection resulted in 622 receptions for 7,590 yards and 69 touchdowns when they were Packers teammates from 2014 to 2021.

But the Raiders cut Carr after one season with Adams, and it seemed like Adams had been toying with leaving town ever since. Carr's Saints were reportedly at the top of Adams' wish list.

Adams also made sense for the receiver-needy Bills, Chiefs, Cowboys, Commanders and Steelers.

The trade keeps Adams away from the AFC East rival Bills and prevents a potential path through the AFC playoffs from becoming even more difficult if he joins the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs.

While the chemistry between Rodgers and Wilson appears to be improving, Adams, like Lazard, has years of experience seeing the same things as Rodgers.

Lazard and demoted offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett are with the Jets largely because of their ties to Rodgers. He also convinced the team to use offensive tackle Billy Taylor and receiver Randall Cobb last season when the whole Packers East experiment fell through when Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon in the season opener.

Wilson, Lazard, Rodgers and cornerback DJ Reed have skirted the NFL's tampering rules while offering support for either explicitly welcoming Adams or the kind of all-in trade this move represents for the Jets.

The Jets enter the season with Super Bowl expectations and have fired head coach Robert Saleh after five games. After losing to the Bills on Monday in Jeff Ulbrich's debut as interim coach, the Jets are off to a 2-4 start.

Adams could make his debut on Sunday against the Steelers.
