Driver hospitalized after accident at Lernerville Speedway

A driver was flown by helicopter to an area hospital Sunday after an on-track accident at Lernerville Speedway in Butler County.

Authorities have not released the man's name or the extent of his injuries.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the Buffalo Township racetrack at 2:37 p.m., a Butler County emergency dispatcher told TribLive.

According to Lernerville consultant Anthony Mariani, the accident occurred during Sunday's 100-lap enduro race, part of the inaugural Geibel Fest Day of Destruction.

It was the final event of the year at the dirt track speedway, a nearly half-mile oval owned by local company Tomson Scrap Metal.

After the accident, the Geibel Fest was held, which also included a demolition derby, a truck boat and trailer race and other competitions.

Mariani said the circuit would not discuss the driver publicly until he received approval from his family.

“We are praying for a speedy recovery and are definitely very concerned for him and all the racers,” he said. “Safety is a topic that is addressed at every one of our events.

“Every car is checked to ensure it meets technical requirements,” he added.
