Detroit Tigers star prospect shines in week one of the Arizona Fall League

The Detroit Tigers are still dealing with the pain of not playing baseball again this season after their magical run came to an end in Game 5 of the ALDS, but some players in the organization are still in action.

While several star prospects in their pipeline have been called up to the show throughout the year, others in their farm system are now competing in the Arizona Fall League.

The Tigers sent seven players to the AFL, led by Thayron Liranzo and Josue Briceno, both of whom are top-10 prospects. What's interesting is that they both also play catcher/first base. So it will be exciting to see how their careers develop on the field and what positions they could play if they reach the majors at the same time.

Liranzo, No. 6 in their pipeline, was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Jack Flaherty deal at the trade deadline. While the other part of this package, Trey Sweeney, has already made an impact with Detroit, the 21-year-old will be a project compared to shortstop.

This time around, he'll get some great experience in the Arizona Fall League, competing against other top prospects around the minors, but while the Tigers are excited to see what their newest star prospect can do, it was Briceno who stood out in the first week of action impressed.

He became the first AFL player to hit three home runs in the same game since 2015, blasting one of them against Andrew Painter, the Philadelphia Phillies' superstar pitching prospect.

MLB.com's Joe Trezza highlighted Briceno as someone who stood out among the other top minor league players sent to the event after he went 6-for-16 with those three home runs and six RBI.

At 20 years old, Briceno gives Detroit another exciting prospect in their farm system who could develop into a viable option for them down the road.

How he and Liranzo fare in the Arizona Fall League will be kept an eye on, but it's a great sign that one of these young Tigers players is off to a good start.
